In a small workshop just outside Quito, Pedro Ushiña begins shaping metal with patience and skill. The craft, passed down through generations, marks the start of a family tradition dedicated to keeping Ecuadorian artisanal jewelry alive.

1990

Byron Ushiña tags along with his dad, picking up the basics: fire, metal, sketching, sales. He could see that this wasn’t just a trade—it was a vision waiting to unfold.

1994

Byron meets Alexandra Aguirre, his partner in life, design, and business. Together, they start dreaming about a brand with its own identity and soul.

1996

With only three pliers, a table, a hammer, and a torch, Byron starts selling his pieces at the Otavalo Artisan Fair. That first sale would become the foundation.

1997

Byron launches his first collection: medals inspired by pre-Columbian symbols. The "charms" are born, blending tradition and modern desire.

1999

The brand begins to gain traction. The vision of a design house becomes clearer as Byron and Alexandra refine their unique aesthetic.

2000

Ushiña Jewelry pieces are displayed at the U.S. Embassy in Ecuador. An early nod that proves good design speaks beyond borders.

The brand continues to grow as artistic and technical foundations are solidified during these formative years.

2004

With support from SIPPO, Ushiña Jewelry earns a quality certificate, validating both their craft and export potential.

2005

Thanks to CORPEI, the brand participates in design and fashion fairs in Germany—representing Ecuador on an international stage.

2006

Byron meets Barb Moreau (CAMTA). They start an annual charity collaboration that continues today—design making a difference.

2007

Ushiña Jewelry wins a Central Bank of Ecuador competition to recreate iconic museum pieces. Ecuadorian talent shines.

2008

Byron and Alexandra open their first gallery, ARI Gallery, in Quito’s Historic Center. A new chapter: design you can experience.

2009

The brand takes on a new name: ARIU. A name that stands for resilience and purpose, turning challenges into beauty.

2010

ARIU is recognized as Ecuador’s top microenterprise by the Inter-American Forum of Microenterprise (FOROMIC).

2013

ARIU participates in Texturas & Colores, CIDAP, and FITE. ARIU isn’t just designing—it’s setting trends.

2014

Byron receives an honorable mention from the IDB for “Strengthening Entrepreneurship in Ecuador.” International backing.

2016

ARIU opens its second gallery at Swissôtel Quito—a clear sign that Ecuador is starting to value its own luxury.

2017

ARIU reaches Quito’s Airport, welcoming the world to Ecuador through a partnership with Travel Stores.

During the pandemic, ARIU launches its online store and third gallery at Swissôtel Quito, featuring 18k gold.

2023

ARIU opens its fourth gallery at the JW Marriott Quito, showing it’s aiming for the very top of the jewelry market.
